In general people bring an idol of Lord Ganesha to their home and worship them for 10 days and on the 11th day grand Visarjan occurs. The Visarjan or the Immersion of the Lord Ganesha into the water bodies is a colorful and musical procession. People really look upto spending some nice time with their loved ones.
Basically in India Ganesh Chaturthi is celeberated at a large scale in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telagana.

Group of youth or organisation or group of business man brings a large statue of Lord Ganesha by collecting funds from the public. They bring Lord Ganesha to the mandaps or pandalas and then lots of cultural programs are organised there.

What is the story behind the tradition of Ganesh Visarjan?
The ritual is done to signify the birth cycle of Lord Ganesha, just as he was created from the clay/earth, his symbolic statue is as well. The idol is immersed into the water bodies so that Ganesha may return to his home after his "Stay" at the devotees home or temple where the Ganesha Chaturthi rituals are conducted.
I will personally request you all to immerse the idol of Lord Ganesha at your home only in the big bucket filled with water and then use it for watering the plants as the rivers are not clean and all of the idol of Lord Ganesha are made up of non-biodegradable material which does not dissolve into the water and choke the water bodies.
